The news this morning was that the government is going to take 10 days to implement its plan for all incoming non-British travellers to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days. Why did they not anticipate this as a possibility and put in place a contingency plan, which they could have on the shelf ready for the moment if it was needed?

A while ago I was the Emergency Planning Manager for a large company, as they had many international travellers, travelling to all parts of the world. Part of my role was to make sure that we were ready to respond if staff were kidnapped.

The UK has spent a lot of money on flood defences nevertheless, every year, a town or a village gets flooded, and we’ll see pictures of ruined houses, businesses and people throwing their possessions in a skip as they have been contaminated by floodwater.

I suspect the Boston Marathon had its’ own multi-agency emergency plan, with the relevant responders and incident managers, on site ready to respond to any incident and implement the plan. About 36 hours into the Texas incident, the Texas Governor turned up and was the first official to manage information on the incident.

So coming back to business continuity, what is the relevance of health and safety to business continuity? One of my jobs as Emergency Planning Manager at Anglian Water, as soon as a major incident occurred, was to find staff members to fill all the shifts at the incident room.
