Charlie Maclean-Bristol lists ten areas where many business continuity plans can be improved in. On many of the business continuity plans that I see it is not clear what the scope of the plan is. The BCI’s Good Practice Guidelines 2013 says that every recovery plan should have a team to manage it.

If you had known the system was going to be down for 24 hours plus then you might have taken a different course of action and invoked your business continuity plan. If your headquarters or key building burns down, then it is obvious that this is a major incident and you should invoke your plans!

As part of the preparation for the exercise, I researched the Chipotle Mexican Grill food contamination outbreak in 2015. Like all aspects of good business continuity planning, the more forethought given to actions before they occur, the more effective the response and the smaller the impact.

After his journey to Key West, Charlie advises business continuity professionals to look at access to their organisation’s site as a possible single point of failure and consider the impact of any potential road closures. In Edinburgh in 2015 the Forth Road Bridge was closed at short notice due to corrosion.
