After the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, Indonesia, which suffered approximately 130,000 deaths, was funded to set up a tsunami early warning system, using buoys to monitor the sea for tsunamis. The tsunami reduced the rest of the town to matchwood.
